What Ruger did with the Asiwaju song is not different from what Carter Efe did with Machala: though the former wouldn’t admit.
Asiwaju is one of the names of Tinubu, and also a name that connotes “being ahead”, “infinity” etc. Ruger’s Asiwaju boasts of this.
The song was dropped at the right time; leveraging on the campaign of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appeal to the politician’s followers and so far, Asiwaju is Ruger’s biggest song. According to Turntable, Nigeria official chart, Asiwaju is Ruger’s first ever no. 1 hit.
The song is also said to have reached no. 1 on all the DSPs available in Nigeria aside YouTube where it’s highest peak is 2.
Recently, there’s been some attacks from critics on Ruger stylishly using Asiwaju to promote the APC presidential candidate and one of the pointers is the perception of a pun in Ruger’s claim of a “fucking baller”; with this, baller assumes a new translation to “Bola”.
