Review: Libianca’s People embodies the victims of depression

“I’ve been drinking more alcohol for the past five days, did you check on me?” is the opening line of the most viral song of early 2023.

Libianca ‘s People embodies how the individual slowly falls into depression unnoticed by the closest people to them.

The Afrobeats song written in Pidgin and English is sung on a simple percussion accompanied by simple piano chords.

Since the release on December 8th, People has gathered over 5 million streams on Spotify and more than 4 million plays on Apple Music. Its recent entrance on the US Afrobeats charts also makes it the first time a Cameroonian singer would appear on the US Afrobeats chart.

With the novelty of the sound and the people’s acceptance of it as seen on Tik Tok, especially, Libianca stands the chance to make more history for her country throughout 2023.
