Fireboy records history at London’s OVO Arena

Fireboy’s 2022 concert at the OVO Wembley Arena was yet another iconic event in the history of Afrobeats.

Fireboy had first recorded a sold-out of tickets at the 12,500 capacity OVO days before he hit the stage for a graceful performance on Sunday night, 14th November, 2022.

Fireboy who was in the company of Rema at the latter’s outing at the 02 Brixton days ago, was joined by his countrymen in the person of Victony and BadBoy Timz; and his label boss, Olamide; and his British friend and collaborator, Ed Sheeran.

While Fireboy performed the Playboy single off his Playboy album, high-spirited Olamide was in the stands with the fans, singing and screaming Fireboy’s lyrics word for word. When later asked why he was not on stage with the singer, Olamide said, “I like to watch him from the stand because I am also a fan”. Olamide once said in an interview that Fireboy is like a boss to him, a boss whose opinion he often seeks.

Fireboy, who recently bagged a nod at MOBO’s Best African Act alongside the likes of Asake, Rema, Burna Boy, Tems and others, brought BadBoy Timz out on stage to perform. The singer also had Ed Sheeran singing Bandana privately before the show began.

Fireboy’s historical outing at the OVO last night now makes him the first Afrobeats singer to grace the OVO Wembley Arena (12.5k capacity), Wembley Stadium (90k capacity), AO Arena (21k capacity), O2 Arena (20k capacity), Wireless Fest (49k capacity) and O2 Brixton (4.9k capacity) altogether.

Sam George Mac is a music journalist known for the reviews of several music albums and songs. He is a singer and songwriter of Afrobeats, Dancehall, Highlife and RnB with the stage name SGM — a graduate of Mass Communication from The West African Union University, Cotonou.
