Burna Boy equals D’banj’s MTV Europe Music Awards records

Burna Boy has tied with D’banj at the MTV Europe Music Award.

Burna Boy, on Sunday night, 14th November, 2022, emerged the winner of the MTV EMA’s Best African Act for the second time in his career. The singer first won the category in 2019.

The singer is now tied with D’banj as the only singers to have won the EMA Best African Act twice. Dbanj had won his in 2007 and 2012 respectively.

Other winners from Nigeria in the past include 2Baba in 2005, Davido in 2017, Tiwa Savage in 2018 and Wizkid in 2021.

Wizkid’s first win should have come in 2016 when MTV Africa mistakenly announced the singer as the winner of the Best African Act category instead of Tanzanian Alikiba.

However, MTV later declared it was an error from their subsidiary in Africa as Alikiba had won the award through a public voting system instead. Wizkid however, originally, won in another category termed “global” and not “African”.

Burna’s second win, last night, was clinched at the expense of Ayra Starr, Black Sherif and Tems in the category.
