The American Music Awards have nominated five Nigerian Afrobeats artistes in the 2022 edition of the award.
Burna Boy, Wizkid, CKay, Fireboy and Tems were all nominated by the AMAs today. The American Music Awards, which is an annual American awards event, usually taking place in the fall, was created by Dick Clark.
The five Afrobeats singers named in the above paragraph have been nominated in the newly introduced category known as Favorite Afrobeats Artiste for their respective success on the American soil as well as the entire Afrobeats scene back home.
CKay has had an enviable outing since the globalization of his hit Love Nwantiti, followed by Emiliana and a handful of shows across the US. Burna Boy has been the most active in performance at bigger venues across Europe and America back and forth. Wizkid maintains his charisma with the virality of Essence and some groundbreaking hard-to-equal records.
Fireboy’s success is tied to his collaboration with Ed Sheeran on Peru Remix, and now, an exploration of the world outside Africa for performances. For Tems, it has been success upon success. She’s been in the limelight more, especially because of the multiple collaborations with Future, Drake, Beyonce and the makers of the movie, Black Panther, all facilitated by her excellence on Wizkid’s Essence.
While this seems to be the criteria for the nods in the AMAs’ maiden Favorite Afrobeats Artiste, Tems bagged more nominations in the Collaboration of the Year with Future’s Wait For U, Rap Song of the Year with Wait For U and R&B Song of the Year with Wizkid’s Essence.
The 2022 American Music Awards, however, is billed to commence at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, 20th November, 2022. Fan voting for all categories has begun, excluding the Favorite K-pop Artiste, which will be open on Tuesday, November 1st.
